Classic Christmas Eve Traditions

attend a christmas eve service

One of my favorite Christmas Eve traditions of all time! I absolutely love walking in to the service on Christmas Eve and leaving at midnight Christmas morning. Definitely worth trying if you haven’t already!

christmas movie marathon

This a good way to spend the day on Christmas Eve. Get cozy in your favorite Christmas pajamas and watch any of these 25 must watch Christmas movies! My go to is always It’s A Wonderful Life!

make reindeer food

Ever since having a child, I keep remembering the small pieces of Christmas that make it so magical as a kid. Making and leaving out reindeer food is one of those memories that truly reminds you how special of a night Christmas Eve is! Reindeer food can be whatever you want it to be, whether that be home made chex, raw oats, glitter, sprinkles, or a combination.

read the christmas story

Reading the Christmas Story in the book of Luke is a great way to re-center your holiday. On Christmas Eve, after everyone’s gotten their Christmas pajamas on and the cookies for Santa are out, settle in by reading the story out loud. Everyone has the chance to read and I will always cherish reading this story with my family.

opening one present

Opening just one present on Christmas Eve is a very fun tradition and a great way to ease the excitement of Christmas! Invite whoever you want for a white elephant exchange or make it more intimate with close friends and family.

Cooking a special meal/favorite to go

Every family has a special home cooked meal or favorite Christmas Eve restaurant they go to every year. It’s a great way to get everyone together before or after a Christmas Eve service and can also serve as a segue into a gift exchange!
