Lo-Tox Living: What It Is and Why It Matters

Let’s get one thing straight: I’m not living in a perfectly non-toxic bubble (and I don’t think you need to either). I still occasionally drink coffee out of to-go cups, I wore a 100% polyester dress to an event last weekend, and I still go through the Chick-fil-A drive through about once a month. But I also believe in doing better when we know better. That’s what Lo-Tox Living: What It Is and Why It Matters is all about. It’s not about perfection, panic, or purging your entire life. It’s about awareness, small shifts, and choosing the better, “lower” toxic option when you can.

We live in a world where nearly everything is touched by chemicals including clothing, cookware, beauty products, furniture. It’s overwhelming, and honestly, most of us don’t have the time, money, or energy to detox every corner of our homes. I get it. But I also think there’s power in the small choices we do make. Infertility now affects about 1 in 5 women, childhood asthma rates have doubled since the 1980s, and autoimmune diseases are among the top 10 leading causes of death in women under 65. When chronic illness is becoming the norm, it just makes sense to support our bodies in small, meaningful ways, starting with what we bring into our homes.  For example,  if you’re running low on mascara, why not try one that doesn’t contain parabens or synthetic fragrances this time around? Or if your old nonstick pan is scratched and on its last leg, maybe replace it with stainless steel or cast iron instead of another Teflon-coated one?

Lo-Tox is a mindset shift more than a lifestyle overhaul. It’s simply asking, “Is there a better-for-me option?” and choosing it when it makes sense. Not out of fear, but out of care. I started applying this to everything from my kids’ pajamas to my yoga pants, to the cleaning sprays under my sink. One by one, when something ran out or wore out, I replaced it with something I felt good about. Not because I had to, but because I wanted to.

The truth is, we’re not in control of everything, but we are in control of what we bring into our homes. And while it might not seem like much, those small decisions add up over time. Fewer hormone disruptors in your lotion, fewer synthetic dyes in your clothes, fewer toxins in your air, it all matters, especially in the long run. It’s not about fear-based living, it’s about informed, empowered living.

So no, I’m not suggesting you go throw out everything you own. I’m just inviting you into the Lo-Tox mindset. Start where you are, use what you have, and when it’s time to replace something. Just pause and ask, “Is there a better option?” That’s all Lo-Tox is. Simple, steady progress toward a life that supports your health, your family, and the planet. And to me, that’s worth paying attention to.

If you’ve made it this far, I hope you feel encouraged—not overwhelmed. Lo-Tox isn’t about doing it all at once or doing it perfectly. It’s about tuning in, paying attention, and making small swaps that feel doable for you. Over time, those little choices can lead to big change—not just in your home, but in your overall well-being.
